Experience & Temperament

1-2 years showing
Eligible Green
Riders: Advanced Beginner (with trainer) to Experienced
More “Whoa” than “Go”, but has his own motor.
Manners: Mild, laid back

Nugget is beautiful, well-bred, sweet, exceptionally smart and athletic, with a sense of humor that has kept me from writing this ad for months.

Unfortunately, his rider grew about a foot taller than anticipated and would like to return to the equitation ring. He has taken Nugget from a backyard pony learning to walk, trot, canter, and jump to competing in the pony division in about a year and a half. Now, Nugget is ready for a rider and trainer who can finish his education and help him reach his full potential.

Nugget has the movement, jump, scope, intelligence, and competitive spirit to become a very special division pony. Most importantly, he loves his job and genuinely enjoys the show ring. He is still six, still learning, and occasionally still very much a pony. However, he wants to understand and makes tremendous progress when handled with patience, fairness, and consistency.

In the Ring

He has a huge step, plenty of scope, and a beautiful jump. He is hard to beat in the hack, and he always ribbons. He moves nicely into the bit when asked but can also go around happily on a loose rein. His leads are solid when his rider sets him up. He will often land the lead from a good distance, and even when the distance is less than ideal, he will still jump.

Nugget has a beautiful, natural flying change that is fluid and subtle, though it is not yet automatic. With a few more months of consistent training, I believe it could become automatic. Please do not yank, kick, and lean for the change. He doesn’t know what that means, so he will likely turn sharp; you’ll end up on the ground while he stands next to you, quietly judging you until you get your life together. He does forgive quickly, though.

He is more whoa than go but has his own motor. He prefers a kind, confident rider with a strong leg and soft, polite hands. Once he trusts his rider, he will give everything he has. He truly has the heart of a lion packed into a petite frame.

Nugget has been ridden by a crossrail kid and was perfect. I believe he could comfortably do the crossrail job for a capable child working with a trainer, but he is not ready for a true beginner. He is a young, intelligent pony whose mind is a sponge. A good training program is a must, and regular professional rides would be ideal.

SHOW EXPERIENCE

Nugget has shown locally for the past year at 2’ to 2’3” and is currently in his first green year. He attended his first and only rated show in April 2026, where he earned ribbons in every class and held his own against ponies with considerably more experience. His second green year can be saved until his next rider is ready.

He has earned several tri-colors at Progressive Show Jumping and Coastal Hunter Circuit shows. Most recently, he was champion in the open Hunter division, amongst many quality horses and riders.

He has shown at a variety of venues, and the most he needs is some perfect prep to help keep him focused. My son has piloted him at every show. However, the amount of prep could be different for a different kid.

Personality and Handling

Nugget loves affection from his people. He loves kisses, scratches, treats, and hearing that he is a good boy.

He does not appreciate children hanging on him simply because he is pony-sized. He has never bitten anyone, but his facial expressions may hurt your feelings.

Nugget prefers clear communication before handling that is unfamiliar to him. For example, taking his temperature should begin with a conversation about personal boundaries.

Nugget loads and unloads like a dream. This is especially impressive considering he once believed loading was a completely unreasonable request. When given time to understand something, he learns it thoroughly.

He cross-ties, leads well, and is learning to ground-tie. He stands for the farrier and is barefoot. He handles most clipping well, but he remains sensitive about his legs and bridle path. He also dislikes having his mane pulled, and I can’t really blame him. Nonetheless, he is learning. We can use a razor-pulling comb without medication.

Nugget hates needles because, well, needles hurt. When he does have to get shots, he does best with patient, confident handling. He is much stronger than he looks, but he improves with every positive experience.

He is food motivated, so be mindful of feed buckets along your path. He will also offer to shower you when being hosed off. Laughing encourages this behavior, which is unfortunate because he is very funny.

Turnout and Daily Life

Nugget needs turnout and companionship. Despite being the smallest pony in the pasture, the herd is unquestionably his. Keeping his mind engaged and his boundaries secure goes a long way. He currently goes out every night and comes in during the hottest part of the day. He loves a good fan and considers one a basic necessity rather than a luxury. He is out 24/7 in the cooler months.

He understands that horse shows require stabling and has become much more comfortable with it, especially when he gets regular walks and a little entertainment. If he protests the stall, give him hay, tell him he is a good boy, scratch his neck and kiss his muzzle, and all will be forgiven.

He can live around dogs but prefers that they respect his space. Young, anxious, or overly energetic dogs are not his favorite, although he has never kicked one.

Care and Maintenance

Nugget is barefoot and an easy keeper. He is UTD on vaccines and coggins. He receives SmartBreathe Ultra, W3 oil, probiotics, and a joint supplement as a precaution. He’s never shown signs of ulcers or had any reason for X-rays. His only injury was when he got his leg caught in his blanket strap. He never showed lameness, but he did get time off, bodywork, and his stifle injected. He has shown no issues since, but this will be fully disclosed and can be discussed with serious inquiries.

He receives bodywork as needed, generally about every four months. I know this pony’s history and am still in touch with his old owner and his breeder. They love keeping up with him and are always open to questions. Nugget is very, very loved – stealing hearts comes easy for him.

The Right Home

Nugget is at the point in his training where he is ready to fly. The right home will have an established trainer, a kind and capable rider, consistent turnout, good herd companionship, and people who appreciate that the best ponies come with opinions. He needs someone who will continue his education, show him and allow him to remain the funny, affectionate, and deeply individual pony he is.

I am incredibly attached to Nugget and will be very selective about where he goes. A lease situation is strongly preferred, although I am willing to consider a sale to the right home. He will always have a place to come back to with us.

Nothing would make me happier than to see him in a partnership that can help him reach his full potential. We would love to keep up with him and make sure he always has a safe place to land.
